It can take a little more time, but once you get there, you may not notice. ![]() There have been many good photos made with little more than a peephole and a wire frame for viewfinding. It's more of a final, but important, check. The viewfinder will come to be mostly a confirmation of what you expect from your picture. Melissa, there will come a time in your growth into photography that you may begin to recognize that some of the most important stuff happens before you look through the viewfinder. Hope you caught the first line of my last post as a joke, and that you recognize that most of my ire about camera design is reserved for whomever else might have the power to change it. Not too long ago, our smile indicator activation switch was a joke. With some equipment combinations, it's becoming more and more impractical to focus and adjust yourself it's just that they're building the equipment to accommodate robots more and hands and eyes less. The viewfinders we see today are designed to make the photographer rely more on the built in computer. Maybe one day camera manufacturers will step up and resume making the basics! We have probably substituted a laser rangefinder for well-made glass. The closest substitute we have to the, say, standard, working optics, in split screen viewfinders (or optical rangefinders) is a small icon indicating whether or not a point is in focus. ![]() Viewfinders used to be equipped for focusing! Instead, we get whatever comes down the factory line these days. I have rarely been fooled by a well made viewfinder with microprism and split screen. I have seen a few pics that looked sharp on the LCD which appeared out of focus after I downloaded them later.
